To investigate this, soil and leaf litter were sampled in the urban area of Naples, Italy and the collembolan community was analyzed using taxonomic and functional approaches. The results indicated that collembolan density was negatively affected by site pollution, and that species richness, diversity and evenness were positively affected by the organic matter content of the soil. Folsomia lawrencei was the most abundant species in sites with high metal contamination and low soil organic matter content, whereas Mesaphorura sp. and Parisotoma notabilis were the most ubiquitous taxa overall. The main agents affecting the frequency of functional traits were metal contamination of soil and litter, soil organic matter content, leaf specific mass and thickness of the litter. The attractiveness and selectivity of the ten fungi was investigated taken into account the effect of the substrate on which the fungus was growing (malt-agar or litter) and the effect of fungal odour. Furthermore, moulting, growth, survival and reproduction of 0. sinensis in the presence of each of the ten test fungi were studied. Mucor plumbeus and Trichothecium roseum were the most preferred whatever the culture substrate and their odour was the most attractive. Two fungi (Penicillium spinulosum and the Basidiomycete S41) attracted Collembola by their odour but were not preferred as food sources. This exotic tree has been referred as a major factor of ecosystem disturbance (Gama et al. 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995; Sousa &amp; Gama, 1994; Vasconcelos et al., 1994). The authors compared edaphic Collembola populations occurring in coppices of Quercussuber L. and Q. canariensis Willd. with those from stands of Eucalyptusglobulus Labill. from Serra de Monchique, to evaluate the effects of reafforestation with this exotic tree. The total analysis of data shows a rupture in the collembola communities associated with eucalyptus. Oak biotopes usually present higher values of diversity and species richness, with a greater total number of species and also more exclusive andlor preferential species than eucalyptus biotopes.
